PM with any questions as my main focus is collecting K98's. Either way if it's an RC, Romy or Albanian as long as the bore is good and muzzle isn't dinged up it should shoot well. And by heavily I mean air hammer marks the size of a quarter to a half-dollar like a drunk did it. The Romanian capture K98's from that same time will look just as bad, or worse, with the Swastikas being peened out heavily with an air hammer. Most Balkan (Albanian) import K98's from the early 90's will look they were beat on hard and will usually have little bluing left and dinged up stocks. If it is then the only items that are going to match are the barrel and receiver. If your rifle has complete "bluing" that looks almost like poorly done black park, along with an electropencil SN on the bolt body, that's another dead giveaway for an RC. Most rifles had there swastikas peened while being re-built in former Soviet Union. Also, laminate stocks are the most common stocks found after 1938, some years for certain manufacturers differ though. You did get lucky and it sounds like you actually have a Mauser Oberndorf stock according to the WaA 655. As for the lack of an "X", not all rifles got them during the rebuild process for whatever reason. The Germans serial numbered the stock inside the barrel channel, sometimes it's stamped and sometimes penciled. Even with out an "X" stamped on the receiver the SN being stamped on left side of the butt stock is a dead giveaway. The finish really good and appears to black finish. The bore is fairly shiny and pretty much pitted, but does shoot well. So, I assume this went through an arsenal overhaul. There is also a P behind the pistol grip. Also, the buttstock has 5935 stamped on the left side. The stock has stamped on the buttstock's right side a eagle holding a swastika and what looks like Wacht 655. Also, the eagle and 655 are stamped on the receiver on the right side. Also, it does have on the side of the receiver and in front of the receiver the eagle holding a swastika, but most of the swastika has been peened out. The front barrel band (3416), bolt (4290), bolt sleeve (403), safety (4290), and a lot of small parts have what looks like the eagle and 655 underneath. The barrel (5935) with a n underneath, front site (35), and receiver (5935) are about the only things that have matching numbers. The receiver has byf 41, which I found to be Mauser-Werke KG, Oberndorf on the Neckar and I guess made in 1941. I need help just understanding what I have. I am new to the Mausers having collected only M1 and M1 carbine rifles and a couple of 1903 rifles. I acquired a K98 yesterday that has import markings by CAI.
